The White Night in Madrid

Here comes it again! The most magical night is called the White Night and it commemorates the biggest cultural celebration of the year, based on the illusion, the deceit of the senses, the magic and the notion of nothing is what it seems. Madrid hosts a long night of free cultural events and activities from 21.00 on 13 September till 07.00 next morning. Madrid citizens will discover a new city under the full moonlight. A city made up of illusions and beautiful dreams.

More than 170 activities are planned for the White Night. The whole city will transform into a canvas where the light projections, the live music and the street theatre will delight everybody. All parks, galleries and museums will open all night for special exhibitions and interactive projects.

Madrid is one of the most cultural city in Europe. Just in one night, it can gather the best artistic proposals from all over the world. This year programme features very important artists who have a special link with the city. Artists like Pedro Almodovar, Rodrigo Garcia, Chema Madoz or Eugenio Ampudia have created specific pieces for this celebration. This year, the White Night pays a special tribute to the Spanish filmmaker Pedro Almodovar with a great creative act. Alberto Iglesias will put the music of his famous soundtracks and Almodovar will choose two more artists who will interpret the most representative songs of his filmography.

But the White Night is more than this. It purposes a formidable programme with 172 activities distributed across the city. The Puerta de Alcala will recuperate its original function, as the gate to get in and out of the city. Palacio de Cibeles will house the kisses of thousands of citizens. The Telefonica's Building in Gran Via will be decorated by artists Lang / Baumann. Chema Madoz will bathe Plaza de Espana in the light of two moons, and many other incredible purposes that you shouldn't miss.

Avant-garde music and jazz music will also have a place in the programme, due to the Animo.5, which will be staged all night at the Paraninfo of the Complutense University. The National Jazz Orchestra will be performing on the steps of the Congreso de los Diputados. Contemporary theatre will once again dismantle the rules of the performing arts, with pieces conceived exclusively for this night. An edition based on illusion and magic would be nothing without a circus! The programme includes a circus that will be performing in the Paseo del Prado.
